I said in my quick social media post, this was a gig like no other, this isn't hypebole.
Before Stories started the night off, and I knew full well they'd be playing the whole of their work in progress Eulogy EP but it didn't make the processing of it any easier. The EP is a concept album on grief, the love of a mother and the insidious hand of cancer that so many have been touched by.
Jamie delivered the songs with a fire and passion that I've not seen before in live music, I've been to some of the most extreme metal gigs around and some of the most heartfelt indie-folk but this was raw, painful, and hard to listen to, but like all good art, it was reflective, full of heart and despite -or in defiance of- the subject matter it was strangely cathartic to me, as it must have been for Jamie. Colin added the music that carried Jamies gritty shouts across the room and it made for a just a surreal time.
Sorry I didn't know what to say after the set guys. Needed some recharch time to unscramble the brain!

Empty Maps were the band to immediately follow, which is not an enviable job! I've caught them a few times recently with acoustic solo sets, so it was cool to see the whole gang together again. Their songs drift from slower paced emotive indie to a bit more angsty distorted tones really well, maintaining a distinctiveness that makes them a great band to see any time.

Quitter came up fae Glasgow to dish out their tunes in Aberdeen. Directing the night into a more lo-fi, chilled indie-emo direction, with mellow vocals and dreamscape guitars it a gentle massage for the soul that has been frayed by Before Stories :)

Seas, Starry are a bi-annual highlight on the Aberdeen gig calendar, really one of my favourite local bands for many years now.
I always struggle to write up their music, it's one of those experiences that makes me forget about taking photos and just whisks me away into their psychadelic, loud, charged, and generally fucking awesome songs. I think that serves as good as any other words I could write, so I'll leave it there. Go check them out, make it a priority!
